


Foliage Type: Deciduous leaves that emerge bright cherry red in the spring, mature to burgundy red in the summer, and finally turn crimson red in the fall.

Use a stake to keep everything in place as necessary. If cold winds are a problem, wrap the sapling in some type of insulation for the winter (like burlap) and tie it up. Lay about 3" of mulch down around the base of the tree to protect the root system. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 80 years or more. It tends to be a little leggy, with a typical clearance of 3 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines.

This tree does best in full sun to partial shade. Red Dragon Japanese Maple will grow to be about 10 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 12 feet. Red Dragon Japanese Maple is an open deciduous tree with a strong central leader and a more or less rounded form. The rough gray bark and red branches add an interesting dimension to the landscape. It produces red samaras from early to mid fall. It features subtle corymbs of red flowers rising above the foliage in mid spring before the leaves. The deeply cut ferny palmate leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding crimson in the fall. Red Dragon Japanese Maple has attractive burgundy foliage which emerges cherry red in spring.
